School students celebrated Earth Day 1999 by joining together to participate in the annual
Groceries Project. The idea for the project began in Seattle, Washington. In 1993, Mark Ahlness, a third grade teacher at the Arbor Heights Elementary School in Seattle, began expanding the project on the Internet. Every year the project grows. The bags for the Clinton Avenue project were donated by Colleen Comoslino, manager of Edwards Super Food Store in Port Jefferson Station. The students at Clinton Avenue decorated the paper bags with thoughtful environmental messages. The bags were returned to Edwards for Earth Day. This project involved 489 schools with over 164, 723 grocery bags in 1998. Clinton Avenue School students decorated 443 bags for Earth Day in 1999. The other Earth Day activities at our school were Earth Day Internet treasure hunts, a playground clean-up after school, a third grade play with an environmental theme, and adoption of endangered wildlife species. Special thanks to the hundreds of students and teachers for their hard work in completing this project. We look forward to getting involved again next year. Thank you Mr. Eaton's Fifth Grade Class for involving all the students at Clinton Avenue in this project. |
